GOD IS LOVE: A MOMENT TO REMEMBER
Think of a recent moment when you encountered someone who was difficult to love.
Perhaps it was a disagreement with your spouse.
A frustrating conversation with a co-worker.
A child who tested your patience.
Someone whose actions disappointed you.
Or maybe it was a moment when you felt afraid, lonely, overlooked, or discouraged.
Now bring that specific moment to mind.
“God is love.”
What might have happened if you had consciously remembered that God was present in that moment?
What if, instead of reacting from frustration, you chose patience?
Instead of holding onto hurt, you chose forgiveness?
Instead of judging, you chose compassion?
Instead of withdrawing, you chose to reach out?
Love Becomes an Inner Flame
When we truly experience God's love, something begins to change within us. His love becomes more than an idea. It becomes an inner flame—something we can return to and unite ourselves with throughout the day.
We may not always feel loving. We may not always respond perfectly. But when we remember that God is love, we can pause, turn our hearts back toward Him, & ask: “Lord, how can I love this person in this moment?”
That is where Scripture becomes life.
And What Happened?
Perhaps the situation didn't immediately change.
Maybe the difficult person remained difficult.
Maybe the disagreement wasn't completely resolved.
Maybe the circumstances were still frustrating.
But perhaps something changed within us.
A little more peace.
A little more patience.
A willingness to listen.
A softened heart.
A repaired relationship.
A moment when we chose love instead of our first reaction.
And sometimes, that small change becomes the place where we recognize God.
A GIFT OF WATER, A GIFT OF LOVE.
Water is one of God's greatest gifts—a symbol of faith, hope, & new life. In the remote village of El Mirador, access to safe drinking water was once only a dream. For years, families—especially women & children—walked long distances to collect water, often relying on unsafe sources that impacted their health & well-being. In 2024, that story changed.
Through faith, perseverance, & the collaboration of missionaries, local villagers, engineers, donors, & parish supporters, water is now flowing in El Mirador. This remarkable achievement is more than an infrastructure project—it is a living testament to God's provision & the power of Catholic mission work.
BRINGING GOD’S LOVE TO HONDURAS
This scripture speaks to the heart of our Honduras Mission. When our missionaries travel to Honduras, we don't go simply to accomplish projects, provide medical care, teach Vacation Bible School, or distribute supplies.
We go because God is love—& His love calls us to love one another.
A medical visit can become an encounter of compassion.
A lesson with a child can become an expression of encouragement.
Repairing a school can communicate dignity & hope.
Bringing water to a village can become a tangible reminder that someone cares.
Sharing a meal, listening to a story, praying with a family, or simply being present can become an opportunity to let God's love be seen.
The mission begins with God's love—& that love is meant to continue long after we return home.
THE REAL SITUATION
Imagine a missionary standing in El Mirador, knowing that for generations families had lived without reliable access to water. The mission had worked for many years overcoming logistic challenges, land ownership obstacles & politics.
Then came the moment when the water finally reached their village.
It wasn't a dramatic medical procedure or a large construction project. It was simply water flowing where it hadn't flowed before.
But behind that water were years of prayer, generosity, hard work, fundraising, persistence, & people willing to serve.
REMEMBERING THE WORD OF LIFE
In that moment, the missionary could recall: “God is love.”
The water became more than a pipe or infrastructure project. It became a tangible expression of love.
God's love was being experienced through people who had chosen to say, “Yes, we will help.”
And perhaps the missionary realized something even deeper: We don't have to say the words “God loves you” for someone to experience God's love. Sometimes we can let them experience it through what we do.
WHAT RESULTED?
There was water.
But there was also dignity, hope, gratitude, plus a tangible reminder that this community had not been forgotten.
Here is where this example becomes especially powerful for EMBER.
The missionary can return home & ask: “Where is God asking me to make His love tangible?”
Maybe it isn't bringing water to a village.
Maybe it's listening to someone who feels forgotten.
Helping a neighbor.
Being patient with a difficult person.
Forgiving someone.
Showing up when someone is hurting.
Because the lesson from El Mirador isn't simply “we brought water.”
It is: LOVE BECAME VISIBLE.
And that is a beautiful way to live 1 John 4:16.
MISSIONARY RELECTION - GOD IS LOVE
“I remember standing in El Mirador & realizing that something we had prayed & worked toward for years had finally happened. Water had reached the village. As I watched the reaction of the families, I now think about the words, ‘God is love.’ In that moment, I understood that love isn’t always expressed through grand gestures. Sometimes it looks like a group of people refusing to give up on a community. Sometimes it looks like digging, carrying, building, giving, praying, & returning year after year. And sometimes love looks like water finally flowing into a village. That experience changed the way I think about the Scripture. God’s love had become something I could see.”
