A SWINGSET. A LEGACY.

A THOUSAND SMILES.

Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
— Matthew 25:40

Sometimes the most meaningful gifts are not the ones wrapped in paper & ribbon. They are the gifts that continue a legacy of love, faith, & service. As another birthday approached, a mother was asked by her children the familiar question: “What would you like for a gift this year?” Having recently returned from serving as a Catechetical Missionary in Honduras in 2025, she found her thoughts returning to the children she had come to know in the communities of La Colonia, El Mirador, & La Esperancita. Rather than wishing for something for herself, she answered simply:

“Let's do something to honor Max by bringing joy to the children I met in Honduras.”

A LIFE THAT CONTINUES TO INSPIRE.

That response was inspired by the life of Maximilian “Max” Xavier Finney, whose legacy continues to touch countless lives. Though Max’s earthly life was brief, those who knew him remember a young man who lived with extraordinary joy, compassion, & faith. He possessed a remarkable ability to recognize the goodness in others, brighten every room with his smile, & serve those around him with genuine love. Max was a young man whose faith, joy, & compassion inspired everyone around him. Most importantly, he loved people—especially children—& sought opportunities to serve them. His life continues to inspire others through the Max Finney Foundation, established in his memory after his passing in 2018. The Foundation seeks to honor Max’s love of learning, his zest for life, & his commitment to helping others.

SEEING CHRIST IN EVERY CHILD.

For those who have served on mission in Honduras, it is impossible to forget the faces of the children. Their faith is vibrant, their joy contagious, & their needs often great. Yet they remind us of a profound truth: Christ is present among the least, the forgotten, & the vulnerable.

In many ways, the children of Honduras embody the same spirit that Max carried throughout his life—a spirit of hope, resilience, joy, & trust in God. To honor Max by serving these children is to continue the work that he himself would have embraced. It is to ensure that his legacy is not confined to memories but expressed through acts of charity, generosity, & love.

A LEGACY MADE VISIBLE IN LAUGHTER.

That vision became reality in June of 2026. Through gifts made in Max's memory & the dedication of the Mission Logistics Team, materials were transported up the mountain to the village of La Colonia. What might seem like a simple playground project became a labor of love as team members hauled supplies over challenging terrain & worked together to construct a new swing set adjacent to the La Colonia school compound.

Today, the laughter echoing across the mountainside & the smiles of children soaring on those swings stand as a living tribute to Max's legacy—a place where children can simply be children, filled with joy, friendship, & hope.

Who Knew They Were Part Missionaries, Part Acrobats?

What started as a pile of materials became a playground filled with laughter. With determination, teamwork, & perhaps a hidden talent for balancing on swing set beams, the Mission Logistics Team turned a mother’s request into reality.

Thanks to gifts made in Max's memory, a new swing set now stands beside the La Colonia school, bringing joy to children for years to come!

INSPIRED BY MAX. CALLED BY CHRIST.

The story of Max reminds us that a life does not have to be long to have a profound impact. His legacy challenges each of us to ask how we can use our own gifts, resources, & opportunities to serve others. Whether through participating in a mission trip, supporting missionaries, sponsoring projects for children, or praying for the missions, every person can play a role in bringing Christ’s light to places where it is needed most.

As we look toward future missions in Honduras, may we be inspired by Max’s example. May we live with the same enthusiasm for life, the same concern for others, & the same willingness to serve. And may his memory continue to bear fruit in the lives of children who may never know his name but will experience God’s love because others chose to honor his legacy through acts of compassion.

WILL YOU HELP WRITE THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THIS STORY?

Mission work is never only about what we bring. It is about allowing God to work through us. Every donated dollar, every school supply, every catechism book, every prayer offered, & every act of generosity becomes a tangible expression of Christ’s love. Through these gifts, children encounter not only assistance for their physical needs but also the hope & dignity that come from knowing they are loved by God. What began as a simple birthday gift became a lasting reminder that even small acts of generosity can transform lives.

Whether through prayer, participation, or financial support, you can help bring Christ's love to the children & families of Honduras.

May Max’s legacy continue to inspire us to live our faith generously, love without hesitation, & serve Christ in the children of Honduras.
