ACROSS THE WATER: PLAN GRANDE
ACROSS THE WATER: A NEW MISSION FRONTIER.
In 2026, the Honduras Mission took a historic step forward as the team extended its outreach by boat to remote coastal communities for the first time.
In villages like Quinito & Plan Grande, entire communities gathered in joy & anticipation as medical care, catechesis, & the love of Christ were brought directly to their shores. What the team encountered was both great need & extraordinary faith. From overflowing clinics to children learning about God’s creation, from home visits in the mountains to Mass in humble village churches, each moment revealed the same truth: these communities are deeply open to the Gospel, yet remain among the most underserved.
“Some went out on the sea in ships… They saw the works of the Lord, His wonderful deeds in the deep.”
As the mission continues to expand into these boat-accessible regions, the needs are growing far beyond what the current resources can meet.
Your support makes this work possible.
Whether through prayer, financial giving, or discerning a call to serve on a future mission team, you can help bring medical care, catechesis, & the hope of Christ to families who otherwise have limited access to both healthcare & pastoral care.
WHERE EVERY SHORE BECAME SACRED.
Together, Quinito & Plan Grande reveal the heart of this unfolding mission along the northern coast of Honduras. Though each village is distinct in geography & experience, both bear the same witness of faith, resilience, & openness to Christ’s presence.
From shoreline arrivals & overflowing clinics to mountain paths & moments of quiet encounter, the mission team found not only opportunities to serve, but communities ready to receive with extraordinary grace. In both places, the pattern remained the same: needs were met with compassion, strangers became neighbors, & ordinary moments became sacred encounters.
In the end, it became clear that these were not simply visits to remote villages—but encounters with Christ revealed through His people, across both water & mountain.
WHERE IS GOD CALLING YOU TO SERVE NEXT?
PART 2: PLAN GRANDE - WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MET MERCY.
On a clear & sunlit morning, the mission team set out on their second voyage to another community accessible only by water. This time, the group was smaller—Dr. Marco, Dr. Carlos, Nurse Joey, Nurse Tami, Father Francisco, & Linda boarded a sturdy boat & once again began the journey along Honduras’ breathtaking coastline surrounding Trujillo.
As they traveled up the coast, the shoreline unfolded like a living mural—flocks of birds overhead, small fishing boats drifting in the distance, & canoes moving quietly between villages tucked into the edge of the sea. It was a moment of stillness & beauty before the work of the day began.
“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
WHERE COMPASSION FINDS THE SHORE.
In the remote coastal village of Plan Grande, accessible only by boat, the mission team was welcomed with open arms, joyful smiles, & hearts ready to receive care.
Amid the beauty of Honduras' shoreline, Nurse Joey's tender embrace of a young girl captures the spirit of the day—a mission rooted not only in medicine, but in love, compassion, & the simple yet profound connections that transcend language & distance.
FROM SHORE TO SERVICE.
Their destination, Plan Grande, offered a wide sandy beach that made docking & unloading remarkably smooth. As the boat came ashore, the team was once again greeted with radiant smiles. Schoolchildren, teachers, & community members stood waiting with a handmade welcome banner, their joy unmistakable & deeply moving.
Without hesitation, supplies were carried to the school, where a clinic was quickly established. Dr. Marco & Nurse Joey set up in a large open-air classroom, while Nurse Tami organized the pharmacy nearby for easy access. Dr. Carlos began seeing patients in one of the classrooms, & soon the school had transformed into a place of healing, care, & quiet compassion.
SMALL HANDS, BIG HEARTS.
In Plan Grande, healing extended far beyond medicine. As parents patiently awaited care, children gathered around Linda for an afternoon of crafts, laughter, & learning. Through simple creations inspired by God's world, they discovered lessons in faith, health, & hope.
Their joyful smiles & eager imaginations served as a beautiful reminder that even the smallest moments of kindness can leave a lasting impression—nurturing hearts as surely as medicine heals the body.
WHERE JOY MET LEARNING AND CARE.
The atmosphere in Plan Grande was striking—calm, patient, & filled with gratitude. Mothers arrived with infants in their arms, toddlers by their sides, waiting peacefully for care. Nearby, children played soccer while their parents sat in line, as if the day itself had become a shared community gathering.
At one point, the children’s curiosity drew them toward the clinic area, & Father Francisco & Linda invited them into a dental hygiene lesson plus craft activity. For many of these children, such moments are rare. With toothbrushes in hand & simple craft materials spread before them, they created images of God’s creation—sun, stars, animals, & sea—while learning about both health & faith. Their joy was immediate & unfiltered, their gratitude expressed in smiles that needed no translation.
Plan Grande itself extends far beyond the shoreline. It includes several isolated mountain communities, many of which are reachable only by long walks along steep terrain. Father Luta & Engineer Jesse had previously visited these villages, celebrating Mass & distributing hygiene kits & clothing gathered through mission support. In response, many residents made the journey down the mountain to access medical care.
HEALING BEYOND MEDICINE.
Some of the most meaningful moments in Plan Grande were measured not by medicines dispensed or patients treated, but by the compassion shared.
In a village where needs are great & resources are few, the mission team offered more than healthcare, they offered dignity, encouragement, hope, & the reassurance that no one is forgotten. Whether caring for a child or listening to a struggling mother, each encounter became a reminder that true healing reaches the body, mind, & spirit alike.
WHERE HEALING TOOK MANY FORMS.
Linda has slowly come to know & deeply appreciate a small mountain community about a 30-minute walk uphill. Teachers there have remained faithfully engaged, sending monthly updates on student progress & classroom needs. Their dedication has already inspired support—computers were purchased for the school plus new doors were installed for the bathrooms. Still, the needs remain great: school supplies, paper, uniforms, & infrastructure improvements such as windows & air conditioning. The teachers continue to dream of what education could look like for their students if additional support were available.
Back in Plan Grande, the clinic became a powerful example of what compassionate service can accomplish. With only two doctors available to care for more than one hundred patients, the team worked tirelessly to bring hope & healing to the community. Along with evaluating & treating acute & chronic health concerns, the team provided glucose testing, H. pylori screening, wound care, antiparasitic medications, vitamins, & support for managing hypertension & diabetes.
Reflecting on the experience, Tami shared, “Seeing villagers with real problems & being able to provide them with appropriate care was so rewarding.” She also described the joy of watching fellow team members serve others with compassion, calling it “a blessing to witness & a sight I will never forget.” Their dedication served as an inspiration to everyone present, demonstrating how even a small team can make a lasting impact through faith, service, & love for others.
Even amid the volume of patients, time was never rushed. Dr. Carlos, in particular, was observed spending extended time with a middle-aged woman struggling with depression. His care went beyond medical attention—offering scripture, encouragement, & gentle conversation that reflected both clinical wisdom & spiritual compassion. It was a quiet but powerful reminder that healing often takes many forms.
At midday, the community expressed their gratitude with a freshly prepared meal of fried fish, followed later by strong, comforting Honduran coffee as the afternoon continued.
UNITED BY FAITH, BONDED BY LOVE.
High above the shoreline, surrounded by the laughter of children & the beauty of God's creation, Father Francisco embodies the heart of this mission. As the sun began to set over Plan Grande, the mission team discovered that the day's greatest lesson was not found in the clinic, but in the people themselves. Gathered in faith & bound by an extraordinary sense of community, the villagers revealed a profound truth: that love, gratitude, & caring for one another are among life's greatest blessings.
HEARTS UNITED.
As the final patients were seen & the last families made their way home, the clinic came to a close. The team packed their supplies & began the climb uphill to attend Mass in a small church overlooking the village. A cool mountain breeze swept across the hills as they gathered alongside Father Francisco & the people of Plan Grande.
What followed was far more than the conclusion of a day’s work—it was a glimpse into the heart of a remarkable community. During the service, Dr. Marco reflected on what had impacted him most: the extraordinary unity of the people. In Plan Grande & Quinito, neighbors look after one another, celebrate one another’s successes, & face hardships together. Their pride in their village is evident in everything they do, from the care they show their families to the way they welcome strangers as friends. It was a powerful reminder that true strength is not measured by wealth or resources, but by the bonds that hold a community together.
As prayers rose from the small church, there was a profound sense of belonging. Mission team & villagers worshiped side by side, united by faith & a shared humanity. In that sacred space, surrounded by mountains & simplicity, everyone present was reminded of what is possible when people genuinely care for one another.
The journey back to Tranquility Bay was quiet. As the boat carried them across the water, the team reflected not only on the lives they had touched but on the lessons they would carry home. They had come to serve, yet the people of these coastal villages had shown them something equally important: the transformative power of community, gratitude, & unwavering commitment to one another.
