Preparing Your Heart for Honduras

ANSWERING A CALL.

As we prepare to depart for Honduras, our suitcases may be nearly packed, our supplies organized, & our plans finalized. Yet the most important preparation is not what we carry in our hands—it is what we carry in our hearts.

Mission work is far more than providing medical care, dental treatment, catechesis, construction projects, or donations. It is a sacred invitation to encounter Christ in a deeply personal way. We are not simply traveling to serve others; we are answering a call to walk where Jesus walks, to love as He loves, & to discover His presence in the faces of those we meet.

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.
— Matthew 25:40

Over the coming days, you will meet children whose smiles radiate joy despite hardship. You will encounter families whose faith remains strong despite limited resources. You will witness gratitude, resilience, generosity, & trust in God that may challenge & inspire your own faith journey.

As missionaries, we often believe we are bringing something to Honduras. The truth is that God is already there. He has been present in these villages long before our arrival. Our mission is not to bring Christ to Honduras, but to recognize Christ already living among His people & to join Him in His work.

ANCHORED IN CHRIST. GUIDED BY MARY. SENT TO SERVE.

As you prepare your heart, anchor yourself in prayer. Spend time with Our Lord in the Eucharist. Entrust your mission to Our Blessed Mother & ask for the humility to serve with patience, compassion, & joy. Pray for your fellow missionaries, the villagers we will encounter, & for the grace to be fully present in every moment.

Be prepared for flexibility. Plans may change. Schedules may shift. Clinics may run long. Supplies may not always be where they should be. In those moments, remember that ministry often happens in the interruptions. Sometimes God's greatest work occurs when our plans give way to His.

MEASURE LOVE, NOT RESULTS.

Release the desire to measure success by numbers, projects completed, patients treated, or lessons taught. The most important moments of this mission may never appear in a report. They may be found in a child's laughter, a grandmother's embrace, a shared prayer, a gentle touch, a listening ear, or a simple smile.

For our Medical, Dental & Ophthalmology Teams: your skills bring healing, comfort, & dignity to those in need. Never underestimate the power of treating a patient with compassion & respect.

For our Catechetical Team: remember that every lesson, craft, game, song, & conversation is an opportunity to plant seeds of faith that God may nurture for years to come.

FOR ALL OF US: REMAIN OPEN TO WHAT GOD WANTS TO TEACH YOU.

Mission trips have a remarkable way of transforming not only those we serve, but those who serve. As you prepare to leave, take a few moments to reflect:

  • What fears am I carrying?

  • What expectations do I need to surrender?

  • How is God calling me to grow?

  • Where might Christ be waiting for me in Honduras?

THEN PLACE IT ALL IN HIS HANDS.

Here I am, Lord; send me.
— Isaiah 6:8

May we travel with grateful hearts, serve with humble hands, love without reservation, & return home forever changed by the people God has entrusted to us.

Honduras awaits. More importantly, Christ awaits us there.

SAFE TRAVELS, DEAR MISSIONARIES.
