The Heart of a Missionary
"The most important thing you pack for Honduras isn't in your suitcase or backpack—it's in your heart."
As our Mission Team prepares for another journey to Honduras, there's no shortage of work to be done. Supplies are ordered, trunks are packed, schedules are finalized, lesson plans are written, budgets are reviewed, & countless details come together through the dedication of many faithful volunteers.
These preparations are essential. But there is another preparation that is even more important. Preparing our Hearts.
Long before we board the airplane, God begins preparing each of us for the work He has already planned. While we often focus on what we will accomplish during the week, perhaps the better question is: How is God preparing to transform us?
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
A HEART THAT IS INTENTIONAL
Throughout Scripture, God calls His people to live with purpose. Mission work is no different. Every conversation, every smile, every prayer, every patient cared for, every lesson taught, & every act of kindness becomes an opportunity to reflect Christ's love.
Before we leave, we should prayerfully ask: "Lord, how do You want to use my gifts, my time, & my heart to serve others?"
Mission isn't about accomplishing our agenda—it is about joining God in the work He is already doing. When we approach each day with humility, compassion, & a willingness to serve, we become instruments of His grace.
A HEART THAT IS FLEXIBLE
Even the best-planned mission trips rarely unfold exactly as expected.
Weather changes.
Schedules shift.
Needs arise unexpectedly.
Someone may ask for your help in an area completely different from what you anticipated.
Rather than viewing those moments as interruptions, we can begin to see them as divine appointments. The Apostle Paul modeled this beautifully throughout his missionary journeys, adapting his approach to meet people where they were while never losing sight of his purpose in sharing the Gospel.
Flexibility is not simply adjusting our schedule. It is trusting that God's plans are always greater than our own.
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
A HEART THAT PERSEVERES
Mission work is deeply rewarding. It is also demanding.
The mountain roads are steep.
The temperatures can be intense.
Long days of ministry require both physical endurance & emotional strength.
There will be moments when you feel tired, uncomfortable, or stretched beyond your comfort zone.
Those moments are often where God does some of His greatest work. Scripture reminds us that perseverance produces maturity, strengthens our faith, & teaches us to rely more fully on Christ.
Every challenge becomes another opportunity to serve with patience, joy, & unwavering trust.
A SERVANT’S HEART
Success on mission cannot be measured only by the number of patients seen, homes visited, projects completed, or lessons taught. The greatest measure of success is whether we faithfully reflected the love of Christ.
A successful mission is built upon hearts that are willing to listen before speaking, to learn before leading, & to serve before being served. It is found in offering encouragement, showing compassion, extending grace, A recognizing the dignity of every person we encounter. Jesus Himself showed us that true leadership begins with humble service.
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
JOINING GOD’S WORK
As we prepare for Honduras this month, may we ask the Holy Spirit to shape our hearts long before we arrive on the moutain. May He give us:
Eyes to see the needs around us,
Ears that listen with compassion,
Hands that serve with joy &
Hearts that remain open to whatever He has planned.
The people of Honduras have much to teach us about faith, resilience, generosity, & hope. As we walk alongside them, we pray that God will not only work through us—but also within us. Because every mission begins long before we arrive.
It begins with a heart that is willing to say "yes."
And when we surrender that heart to God, He is faithful to do far more than we could ever ask or imagine.
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.”
